Abstract: In the New Testament, the Book of Matthew tells the story of how Jesus of Nazareth sent his 12 apostles to the neighboring towns to heal the sick. Beyond the story's theological message lies a possible new category of constraints: the constraints to avoid negative outcomes (CANO). This paper examines this possible new category of constraints. In doing so, it identifies the constraints that Jesus placed on his apostles; it defines the differences between constraints and risks and proposes a definition of CANO. It describes the tools that can help project managers identify CANO and outlines the process of using brainstorming to identify CANO. It then discusses the Biblical story in relation to the elements of managing projects: process flowchart, project charter, and the five process groups--initiating (scope), planning, tasks and resources flowchart (executing), controlling, and closing.

Abstract: The Bible describes many outstanding efforts that accomplished astounding outcomes. This paper examines one of the New Testaments more well-known efforts, that of when Jesus of Nazareth sent his twelve followers--his apostles--to neighboring towns for the purpose of healing the each town's sick residents. It discusses this effort from a project management viewpoint, casting Jesus of Nazareth in the role of project manager so as to understand the three uncommon constraints his apostles followed to avoid failing in their effort. In doing so, it identifies the constraints that Jesus placed on his apostles and the difference between common project constraints and typical project risks; it suggests a definition for Jesus's uncommon constraints and details three tools that can help project managers identify these uncommon constraints within their projects. It then discusses the examined biblical effort in relation using the PMBOK Guide to manage projects, mapping the referenced biblical texts to project management's five process groups and the flowcharts and documents used to management projects.
